Many beginners think surfing is about strength or balance, but often the real secret is board choice. At our Essaouira Surf School we start every lesson by matching each student to the right volume, length and shape. For first timers in the bay we almost always use large soft-top boards, between 7’6 and 9’. The extra length and width create stability, so you can focus on timing and stance instead of fighting for balance.
As you progress during the week, we may gently reduce the size of your board so that you can turn more easily and paddle faster. Because we work every day in Essaouira we know exactly how different boards behave in the local waves, currents and wind. Instead of guessing, you benefit from years of trial and error. The result is simple: more waves caught, more time standing and more smiles.
