Essaouira is the kitesurf capital of Morocco. Every summer, the Alizé trade winds arrive with clockwork regularity, turning the wide Atlantic bay into one of the best kitesurfing destinations in the world. Flat water lagoons, side-shore wind, a sandy bottom, and a vibrant surf culture make Essaouira the number one choice for kiters of all levels — from complete beginners taking their first lesson to advanced riders launching into massive jumps above the Atlantic.
This guide covers everything you need to know to plan your kitesurf trip to Essaouira in 2026.
Why Kitesurf in Essaouira?
Essaouira has been on the kitesurf map for over two decades. The reasons are simple:
- Reliable wind. The Alizé trade winds blow from the north every afternoon from April to October, often reaching 20 to 30 knots. This is thermal wind — predictable, clean, and consistent. You can plan your sessions days in advance with confidence.
- Safe conditions. The bay of Essaouira offers side-shore wind, which is the safest wind direction for kitesurfing. If something goes wrong, the wind carries you along the beach rather than out to sea. The bottom is sandy and flat, with no reef.
- Flat water and waves. The bay has a natural lagoon area with flat water — ideal for beginners and freestyle riders. Further out, the Atlantic swell creates wave-riding conditions for advanced kiters.
- The full package. Essaouira is not just a kitesurf spot. It is a living city with a UNESCO medina, incredible food, a rich musical culture, and a surf scene that runs parallel to the kite scene. You come for the wind and stay for everything else.
Kitesurf Conditions in Essaouira — Month by Month
January to March — Low Season for Kitesurf
Wind is less reliable in winter. You may get good sessions but consistency is not guaranteed. This is the peak surf season however, so if you kite and surf, winter is still worth the trip for the waves.
- Wind: 8–15 knots on good days
- Recommendation: Come for surf, kite as a bonus
April and May — Season Opening
The Alizé begins to establish itself in April. Wind becomes more consistent from midday onwards. Water temperature is rising (17–19°C) and the beaches are uncrowded. April and May are excellent months for intermediate kiters who want space and good conditions without the summer crowds.
- Wind: 12–22 knots
- Wetsuit: 3/2mm
- Recommendation: Great for intermediate riders
June to August — Peak Kitesurf Season
This is the heart of the kitesurf season in Essaouira. The Alizé blows almost every afternoon with force, often 18 to 28 knots in July and August. The wind is so reliable that many kitesurf camps and schools run back-to-back weeks throughout the summer.
June is slightly lighter and more manageable for beginners. July and August bring the strongest wind — experienced riders will be in their element, but beginners may need smaller kites.
- Wind: 18–28 knots
- Wetsuit: Shorty or 2mm
- Recommendation: Best season overall — book far in advance
September and October — Golden Season
September and October are arguably the best months to kitesurf in Essaouira. The wind remains strong and consistent, the summer crowds begin to thin, prices drop, and the water is at its warmest (21–22°C). The light in September is golden and the city returns to its relaxed rhythm after the summer peak.
- Wind: 15–25 knots
- Wetsuit: 3/2mm
- Recommendation: Best combination of wind, warmth, and calm — highly recommended
November and December — End of Season
Wind becomes less reliable again but there are still excellent sessions to be had, particularly in November. The surf picks up as Atlantic storms arrive. A good month for the waterman who wants to kite when it is windy and surf when it is not.
- Wind: 8–18 knots on good days
- Wetsuit: 4/3mm
- Recommendation: Flexible itinerary needed
The Kitesurf Spot in Essaouira
The Main Bay
The main kitesurf spot in Essaouira is the wide beach directly in front of the city. It stretches for several kilometres with plenty of space for kiters at all levels. The wind is side-shore from the north, which is perfect and safe. The beach has a natural lagoon area closer to the dunes that offers flat water — ideal for beginners and those working on freestyle tricks.
Launch and land: There are designated launch and landing zones on the beach. Always use them and follow the right of way rules between kiters and surfers.
Sidi Kaouki — Advanced Downwind
Sidi Kaouki is 25 kilometres south of Essaouira and is accessible by road or by downwind kitesurf run. The downwind from Essaouira to Sidi Kaouki is one of the classic rides in Morocco — several kilometres of open Atlantic with clean swell and consistent wind. For experienced riders only.
Diabat Lagoon
Just south of Essaouira near the ruins of Jimi Hendrix's legendary retreat, the Diabat lagoon offers flat and shallow water when the conditions are right. This is a favourite spot for beginners and for those practising water starts and board recovery in a forgiving environment.
Moulay Bouzarqtoun
Further south, Moulay Bouzarqtoun is a wide tidal lagoon that produces incredible flat water conditions. On the right tide, the lagoon is perfectly flat and knee-deep — the closest thing to a kitesurf pool you will find in Morocco. It is a longer drive but worth it for freestyle and freeride riders.
Learning to Kitesurf in Essaouira
Essaouira is one of the best places in the world to learn kitesurfing. The consistent side-shore wind, flat water zones, sandy bottom, and professional IKO-certified schools make it a safe and efficient learning environment.
How Many Lessons Do You Need?
Most beginners need between 6 and 12 hours of lessons to become independent riders. The standard progression is:
- Hours 1–2 — Theory and safety: Learn how the kite works, wind windows, right of way rules, safety systems, and self-rescue. This is done on the beach with a trainer kite before touching the big kite.
- Hours 3–4 — Kite control on the beach: Fly the full kite on the beach. Learn to launch, land, park, and control the kite through the full wind window. Body drag in the water begins at the end of this stage.
- Hours 5–6 — Body dragging in the water: Enter the water with the kite only — no board. Learn to body drag upwind and downwind. This is the most important skill in kitesurfing and the one most beginners rush past.
- Hours 7–9 — Water start: Add the board. Learn the water start — the moment when everything comes together. Most students get their first short rides in this stage.
- Hours 10–12 — First rides and riding upwind: Consolidate your water starts, learn to ride in both directions, and begin to ride upwind. After 12 hours, most students are independent riders.
IKO Certification
Essaouira Surf School & Camp is IKO certified. The IKO (International Kiteboarding Organisation) certification is the international standard for kitesurf instruction. Upon completing your course, you receive an IKO card that is recognised worldwide for equipment rental and progression tracking.
Kitesurf Equipment in Essaouira
What Size Kite Do You Need?
Kite size depends on your weight and the wind speed. For Essaouira conditions:
- Light riders (under 65kg): 9m kite in strong wind (20+ knots), 12m in medium wind (15–18 knots)
- Medium riders (65–85kg): 10–12m in strong wind, 14m in medium wind
- Heavier riders (85kg+): 12m in strong wind, 14–17m in medium wind
In July and August when the wind is strongest, most riders use smaller kites (7–10m). In April, May, September, and October, larger kites (12–14m) are more common.

Kitesurf and Surf — The Perfect Combination
One of the great advantages of Essaouira is that you can surf and kitesurf in the same day without compromise. The wind schedule makes this naturally easy:
- Morning (08:00 – 11:00): Surf session. The wind is light and the waves are clean and glassy. Perfect surf conditions.
- Afternoon (13:00 – 18:00): Kitesurf session. The Alizé wind arrives and builds through the afternoon. Perfect kite conditions.
Many of our guests do exactly this — a surf lesson in the morning and a kitesurf lesson or rental in the afternoon. It is one of the most complete watersport experiences available anywhere in the world.
Practical Tips for Your Kitesurf Trip to Essaouira
- Check the forecast. Use Windguru (Essaouira station) for the most accurate wind forecast. The Alizé is reliable but not infallible — checking 3 days ahead is recommended.
- Book lessons in advance. Peak season (July and August) is extremely busy. Book your lessons at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance.
- Respect other beach users. The beach is shared between surfers, kiters, swimmers, and horse riders. Give right of way to surfers and swimmers. Never launch or land near people.
- Learn self-rescue before you need it. Your instructor will teach you self-rescue in your first lessons. Take it seriously — it is the skill that gets you back to shore safely if something goes wrong.
- Bring sun protection. You are looking up at a kite for hours in the Moroccan sun. A hat, sunglasses, and SPF 50+ are essential.
- Stay hydrated. The wind dries you out faster than you expect. Drink water before and after every session.
Frequently Asked Questions About Kitesurfing in Essaouira
Is Essaouira the best kitesurf spot in Morocco?
Yes. Essaouira has the most consistent wind, the safest bay conditions, and the most developed kitesurf infrastructure in Morocco. It is the reference destination for kitesurfing in North Africa.
Can a complete beginner learn to kitesurf in Essaouira?
Yes. The flat water zone, side-shore wind, and sandy bottom make Essaouira one of the safest places in the world to learn. Our IKO-certified instructors guide you through every step.
How long does it take to learn to kitesurf?
Most beginners become independent riders after 8 to 12 hours of lessons. With daily sessions during a camp week, you can go from zero to riding in 5 to 7 days.
Is kitesurfing dangerous?
Kitesurfing has risks like any action sport. With proper instruction, the right equipment, and respect for the safety rules, the risk is manageable. Never try to learn alone — always take lessons with a certified instructor.
What is the minimum age for kitesurf lessons in Essaouira?
We teach children from around 10 to 12 years old, depending on weight (minimum approximately 35kg) and coordination. We offer age-appropriate instruction with adapted equipment.
Can I rent kitesurf equipment without taking lessons?
If you already have your IKO level 2 card or equivalent experience, yes. Show us your certification and we will set you up with rental equipment. If you are not certified, we require you to take lessons first for your own safety and the safety of others on the beach.
What is the difference between kitesurfing and wingfoiling in Essaouira?
Kitesurfing uses a large kite on lines connected to a bar. Wingfoiling uses a handheld inflatable wing. Both use the same Essaouira wind. Wingfoil is generally considered easier to learn for people with no wind sport background. We offer both at the school.
Is Essaouira or Dakhla better for kitesurfing?
Both are excellent. Dakhla (in southern Morocco) has a famous flat water lagoon and very strong wind — it is more technical and remote. Essaouira has more consistent wind in summer, better infrastructure, a richer cultural experience, and is much easier to reach from Europe. For most visitors, Essaouira is the better choice.
