Surf Essaouira is one of Morocco's best-kept secrets. Tucked along the Atlantic coast, this ancient walled city offers consistent waves, warm hospitality, and a surf scene that welcomes everyone from absolute beginners to experienced riders looking for their next adventure.
Why Surf in Essaouira?
Essaouira sits on a natural bay sheltered from the strongest Atlantic swells, making it one of the safest and most accessible surf destinations in Morocco. The sandy bottom means no reef cuts, the waves are forgiving for beginners, and the water stays warm enough to surf comfortably year-round with the right wetsuit.
Unlike the more crowded surf towns of Taghazout or Agadir, Essaouira offers a unique combination of surf, culture, and freedom. After your morning session, you can walk through a UNESCO-listed medina, eat fresh grilled fish at the harbour, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic — all within the same day.
The Best Surf Spots Around Essaouira
1. Essaouira Bay — Best for Beginners and Intermediates
The main beach in front of the city is the heart of the surf scene in Essaouira. A wide sandy beach stretching several kilometres, it offers gentle beach break waves that are perfect for learning. The bay is naturally protected, which keeps the waves manageable even when the Atlantic is pushing bigger swell further south.
This is where Essaouira Surf School & Camp runs all beginner and intermediate surf lessons. The sandy bottom, shallow water zones, and absence of strong currents make it the ideal classroom for first-time surfers.
Best conditions: Morning sessions before the Alizé trade winds pick up. Mid tide is generally the best window.
2. Sidi Kaouki — Best for Intermediate and Advanced Surfers
Located 25 kilometres south of Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki is a powerful beach break that handles bigger swell. It is more exposed to the open Atlantic, which means more consistent and punchy waves. On a good day, the left and right peaks here are world-class.
Sidi Kaouki is not suitable for beginners. The rip currents are stronger, the waves more powerful, and there are fewer people in the water to help if something goes wrong. Our surf school organises guided day trips to Sidi Kaouki for intermediate and advanced students.
Best conditions: October to March for size and consistency. Bring a 4/3mm wetsuit in winter.
3. Imsouane — The Longest Wave in Morocco
Imsouane is a two-hour drive south of Essaouira but worth every minute. The famous bay wave at Imsouane is arguably the longest rideable wave in Morocco — a long, slow right-hander that can carry you for hundreds of metres on a good day. It is perfect for intermediate surfers wanting to work on their turns and style.
Our surf school organises overnight and day trips to Imsouane as part of surf camp programmes.
4. Tafedna — The Hidden Gem
Tafedna is a small fishing village about 70 kilometres south of Essaouira. Almost unknown to tourist crowds, it offers a rocky point break that works best on medium swell with offshore winds. The drive there winds through argan tree forests and Berber villages — an adventure in itself.
When is the Best Time to Surf in Essaouira?
October to March — Peak Surf Season
This is the best time for surfing in Essaouira. Atlantic storms generate consistent swell, the wind is lighter in the mornings, and the lineup is emptier than in summer. Water temperature drops to around 16–18°C so you will need a 4/3mm wetsuit, but the waves are at their best.
April and May — Ideal Balance
Spring offers a sweet spot between good swell and warmer temperatures. Water reaches 18–20°C, a 3/2mm wetsuit is comfortable, and the waves are still consistent without being too powerful for beginners. This is one of the most recommended periods to visit. See our month-by-month surf season guide for more detail.
June to September — Summer Sessions
Summer brings smaller and cleaner waves in the bay, making it the best season for absolute beginners. The water is warmest (20–22°C), a shorty or 2mm wetsuit is enough, and the beach is lively. However, the Alizé wind picks up strongly in the afternoon (15–25 knots), which makes morning sessions essential — ideally between 08:00 and 11:00.
The Alizé Wind — What You Need to Know
Essaouira is nicknamed the "Windy City" for a reason. The Alizé trade winds blow almost every afternoon from spring to autumn, often reaching 20–30 knots. For surfers, this means choppy and disorganised conditions in the afternoon. Always book your surf lessons in the morning. The same wind that ruins afternoon surf makes Essaouira the number one kitesurf destination in Morocco.
