Riding a kite on your own in Essaouira means a fixed order: kite on the sand, bodydrag, waterstart, then upwind. The kitesurf school in Essaouira runs that path in small groups, with IKO instructors, on a sandy bay.

Why learn in Essaouira
The Wind City has steady trade winds, mainly from April to October, and rideable days outside that window. The bay works for learning for three reasons:
- Side-shore wind — it takes you along the beach and back toward the sand, not offshore.
- Open sand — launch, land and fly the kite without an immediate obstacle.
- Other spots — Sidi Kaouki and Moulay Bouzerktoun, a short drive away, once you can hold a reach.

The school: coaching and IKO
Instructors are IKO certified and know the bay's currents. The pace follows you.
- Small groups or private — semi-private for 2 students, or one instructor for you. More real time in the water.
- Brief and debrief — the session is set up first, then feedback on stance before you go again.

Gear
The quiver is renewed regularly. The school is a Duotone and North centre.
- Kites sized to the day's wind, with relaunch practised in the lesson.
- Boards that forgive early mistakes, then livelier twintips.
- Safety — harness, helmet, vest, Atlantic wetsuit. Included in the lesson.
Trip tips
- Season — April to October for the most reliable wind. Rideable days exist the rest of the year.
- Strength — the harness puts the pull on your waist. Technique matters more than arms.
- Bag — swimwear, towel, waterproof sunscreen, sunglasses, a windbreaker for breaks. The rest is provided.
FAQ
From what age or weight?
There is no hard age cut-off. You need to swim, feel comfortable in the water, and have enough weight to hold the kite — generally around 35 to 40 kg. We confirm that when you book.
How many hours until I ride alone?
Plan on 6 to 10 hours to ride and start going upwind. With steady wind, many students get first reaches in about 3 days. Weather can stretch or shorten that.
What if there is no wind?
The session is postponed, or offered as surf or wingfoil if the sea allows. Hours that are not taught are not charged.
