Essaouira, wind and waves

Between the ramparts and the Atlantic, the Wind City has steady wind and a swell that returns often. The sandy bay is where people take first kite steps and first surf waves. The wind is side-shore, along the beach.

Around the bay: Sidi Kaouki (about 25 minutes south) and more exposed breaks once the level allows.

Surf, kitesurf and wingfoil

Surf lessons

From the sand to the take-off. Groups up to 6, about 2 hours, foam boards first, then livelier boards. Group from €30 for 2 hours, gear included. Surf school.

Kitesurf lessons

IKO method: wind window, kite on the beach, bodydrag, waterstart, then reaches. Semi-private (2 students) or private. Group from €55 for 2 hours, gear included. Kitesurf school.

Stays and camps

Camps combine lodging, meals and lessons. The type of lodging and the number of nights are confirmed when you send your dates. What the camp pages already list:

• Surf camp — breakfast, lessons, free surf, local dinner. Essaouira surf camp.

• Around the sessions — yoga, quad, horse riding, hammam or a camel ride, as options. Free time is also the medina, local food and thuya wood craft.

Rental, video feedback and storage

• Rental — if you already ride alone: boards, wetsuits, and kite gear at the centre. Surfboard rental in Essaouira.
• Video feedback — ask when you book, to review stance. The centre also takes session photos.
• Storage — lockers during the lesson, and space for your own gear for the stay.

Is gear included in lessons?

Yes for lessons: wetsuit, board, and for kite the kite, harness, helmet and vest. Rental is for riders who already go out alone.

Which season?

Kitesurf and wingfoil: trade winds mainly April to October. Surf: more regular swell from September to March, with sessions possible all year, often in the morning.
