Wingfoiling is the fastest-growing water sport in the world, and Essaouira is proving to be one of the best locations to learn. Combining the power of a hand-held wing with the efficiency of a hydrofoil, it offers a sensation of "flying" over the water that is truly addictive.
Why Essaouira for Wingfoiling?
The bay of Essaouira is exceptionally large, providing plenty of room for those long reaches required during the learning phase. More importantly, the side-shore wind means that if you drift, you will simply drift down the beach rather than being pushed out to sea. This makes it an incredibly safe environment for beginners.
The Perfect Setup for Learning
For those just starting, we use high-volume boards (120L to 140L) and large foils (2000cm2 or more). This provides the stability needed to master the wing handling before you even think about getting onto the foil. Once you have the wing control, the lift of the foil will take care of the rest.
Advanced Wingfoiling: The Waves
Once you've mastered the basics, Essaouira becomes a wave-foiling paradise. The Atlantic swell enters the bay as long, mellow lines. On a foil, you can ride these waves for hundreds of meters without even using the power of the wing. It's the purest form of surfing.
When to Visit
- Best Wind: April to October (Stronger Alizés).
- Smooth Water: Early morning or low tide provides the flattest water for learning.
- Wave Foiling: Winter months provide the best swells for advanced foilers.
